CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"This is your last chance to tell us where you put that soul," Cheryl said.

I guess this was a bad time to tell her that I had been lying. The whole time. But it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.

"We're not telling you a thing," I said.

"Then you'll die," Cheryl said. She motioned to Serrotha. "Kill them."

"With pleasure," the demon said, stalking toward us.

CeCe leaped into the air and slashed at the demon, but Serrotha was too quick. Here, demons were twice as powerful.

Serrotha sidestepped CeCe and landed a claw in her back. CeCe crashed against a bookcase and toppled to the floor.

The mantis was upon her, clawing and snapping at CeCe as Serrotha's human head laughed and laughed and laughed. CeCe struggled underneath the gigantic demon's weight.

CeCe’s sword slid toward my feet with a metallic shing. Would I be able to wield a lich's sword? I scooped the blade off the ground. The damn thing was heavy. I could hardly hold it up with one hand, and I had no idea how CeCe wielded it so effortlessly.

I gripped the sword with both hands like a baseball bat.

I ran at Serrotha, but the demon whipped around, hitting me with its backend.

I sailed into the foyer, in the middle of Bo and Kyle, who were circling each other. I jumped up and ran toward the demon again, this time stabbing the sword in her back.

Serrotha screamed as a rush of blue curdling blood poured out.

It gave CeCe an opening. She kicked the demon's human head in a backflip as she jumped to her feet. She grabbed the sword from me and slashed at Serrotha's necklace. But the demon was too fast again. It grabbed the sword, hit CeCe in the face with the hilt, and then plunged the blade through her stomach.

CeCe looked at the blade, then at me, then at the demon.

"It's up to you, Lester," she said, blood blooming in her mouth.

The demon drew the sword out in one quick motion, then plunged it in again. CeCe screamed.

Serrotha lifted the hilt and launched CeCe out of the window. The glass shattered, CeCe flew through the spirit world, and she hurtled down into a rocky canyon below.

I settled on Cheryl, who was still sitting on the couch with her legs crossed. The corner of her mouth drew upward into a slight grin.

"Now we can settle this between us, necromancer."

They killed CeCe. For now.

CeCe was our security. With her around, I didn't have to worry about safety so much. Now I was in trouble.

I had to think fast. I had a feeling Serrotha wasn't going to hesitate to give me the same fate.

Bo and Kyle were still circling each other in the corridor.

"Y'all are gonna pay for killing her," Bo said. "Y'all are crazy."

"Not as crazy as the two of you for coming here," Kyle said. "What did you think would happen?"

"Frankly, I thought we would come in, beat the mess out of the two of you, and ride off into the sunset," Bo said.
